In an eastside LA suburb there’s a man locked in his room Who has learned to love all humans, can’t seem to find a single one On his desk next to his Bible is a notebook that contains In peaceful poetry, the purpose of every tragedy and pain He’d share the solution, but there’s none he cares to tell Because he loves everybody but the one in front of him He’s been searching for the answers to questions old as time Like: are we human, are we dancer? And do all songs need to Have parallel structure? In the fog he found a jar full of every reason why He pulled his fist up feeling hopeful but his hand was stuck inside He holds the theory that he might learn to live in time Cause he loves everybody but the one in front of him He gives his alms to the poor, Long as they don’t bug him anymore And keep off my property, I just need a moment of peace Because I love everybody, I just want a little peace He loves everybody, He loves every living thing He loves everybody But the one in front of him

Just get your feet to touch the floor Slowly remember what you woke up for Take in the silence for a minute more One breath is more than we could ask for Might help to write yourself a list A couple of friends you’re glad you have today And don’t forget to give yourself a little grace Cause we were never meant to live this way Hurricanes and wars being waged, will I somehow be erased? Surely all these worries betray how they change your life today So when you feel afraid, like everything won’t be okay Take a breath and just address what’s here today You don’t need a whole damn cake; just a piece will fill your plate That’s plenty existential questions for a day; give yourself a break I’d bet your words could change the world May even shift the course of history But it’s okay if you don’t write a word today Humans don’t refuel with gasoline Sturdy work is fading away, will I somehow be replaced? Worry for the bills to be paid never made them go away So when you feel afraid, like everything won’t be okay Take a breath and just address what’s here today You don’t need a whole damn cake; just a piece will fill your plate That’s plenty existential questions for a day; give yourself a break Use your heart don’t think so hard Let the stars and sky align you So when the lofty words don’t work And when you walk away confused from church Just let your body draw your spirit to the earth You can rest a little; give yourself a break

I guess it’s been a quarter century Since I showed up wailing no one knew my name I thought by now I might have had it figured out But the only thing I’m sure of is it’s all a game I tried to fit it all into the tales they told But the more I see the more I think I’m bound to fail Then moments come when all my thinking fades away And the parts of life that matter slowly show their face Like sunsets and slow moving days Like water our worries evaporate And somehow they freeze into snowflakes As we turn back to children and we learn to play I guess that life has always been a mystery And we all just play pretend that we know what it means We get outraged when somebody sees it differently When people born in different places disagree It’s almost like we hardly share reality And alone in boxes we've forgotten how to see And all the while we miss our shared humanity The ground of our existence, all that sets us free Like sunsets and slow moving days Like water our worries evaporate And somehow they freeze into snowflakes As we turn back to children and we learn to play

When I was just a little girl I asked my mother what will I be Will I be pretty, will I be rich, here’s what she said to me Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be The future’s not ours to see, Que Sera Sera When I grew up and fell in love I asked my sweetheart, "What lies ahead? Will we have rainbows day after day?" Here's what my sweetheart said: Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be The future’s not ours to see, Que Sera Sera

about

To grow as a person can take several different forms — seeking understanding of the world, letting go of understanding, developing your mind or your body, giving yourself grace and being patient with yourself, among many other things — and this collection of songs explores several aspects of that growth process. I hope you see parts of yourself in this journey of growth.
